AFTER THE WAVE: ART BY THE CHILDREN OF MOTHER LANKA On Boxing Day 2004, as Australians settled in for a day of rest and relaxation, the people of the Indian Ocean countries were experiencing one of the world's greatest natural and humanitarian disasters. After the Wave tells the story of the 2004 tsunami through paintings and stories by the children and parents of coastal Sri Lanka. The 37 framed pictures (600mm x 690mm) provide poignant and powerful reminders of the event and its aftermath. The sometimes bleak and disturbing images are balanced with messages of hope and promises of new beginnings.
The art was collected by the Children of Mother Lanka Association Inc., a registered charity, whose aim is to raise funds for the building of new houses in this community. The exhibition includes 11 foamcore-mounted didactic panels, internal fabric banner and DVD footage from the community before the tsunami. There is also a free (photocopied) catalogue, teachers' notes and pro-forma graphics which can be adapted if required.
